Life of the King

Born on August 21, 1963, the eldest child of King Hassan II. Together with his four siblings, he grew up as a nobleman of Morocco.

At the age of 22, he completed his law studies.

In 1999, his father died and 36-year-old Mohammed had to take over the throne. Three years later, he married Lalla Salma, a computer engineer.

Crown Prince Moulay Hassan was born in 2003. His younger sister Lalla Khadija followed four years later.

He now owns nine palaces throughout the country and has several estates abroad. With an estimated private fortune of 5.2 billion euros, he is one of the richest kings in the world.

Interesting Facts

  • The crown prince may marry only when he is king. That is, after his father has died

 

  • The kings are always called Mohammed or Hassan. The previous king was called Hassan II, the current king is called Mohammed VI, the crown prince is called Hassan III and his son will be called Mohammed VII.

 

  • The annual cost of royal maintenance is about 215 million euros.

 

  • The king and his “wife” Lalla Salma have not been seen together for several years and the princess has not made a public appearance with the royal family for a long time. The royal couple is separated, but nothing has ever been announced publicly. Therefore, the craziest speculation arises among the population about the cause of the separation.

 

  • Mohammed VI bought himself a 1.2 million Swiss watch. This caused a great enpörtheit of the Moroccan population.

 

  • In honor of Lalla Khadiya’s birth, thousands of prison inmates were released.

 

  • Criticism of the king is punishable by a 3-year prison sentence.
